Eulychnia castanea is a cactus native to the rocky coastal slopes of northern Chile, thriving on sandy and gravelly soils. It exhibits a shrubby, polycarpic growth with columnar stems exceeding 3 meters. Unique within its genus, it features short, rigid spines densely packed in close areoles. Cylindrical columnar stems, 5-7 cm diameter, with 6-8 pronounced ribs. Central spines 3-5 mm, rigid, dark brown. Oval areoles spaced 1-1.5 cm apart. Intense green color with bronze hues during summer.
Full direct sunlight exposure for at least 6 hours daily. Watering limited to spring and autumn, avoiding waterlogging. Substrate with minimum 70% mineral content (pumice, coarse sand). Minimum temperature 5 °C. Root rot risk if overwatered.
