Native to mountainous areas of Japan, Euphorbia japonica thrives on rocky slopes with siliceous soils. It is a polycarpic species exhibiting a compact, bushy growth habit with thick, jointed stems, distinguishing it within the Euphorbia genus. Stems cylindrical, 1-2 cm thick, jointed and compactly arranged. Leaves reduced to linear bracts 5-10 mm long, dark green with bronze hues during winter.
Provide full sun exposure for minimum 6 hours daily. Water exclusively in spring and summer, avoiding waterlogging. Use substrate with at least 70% siliceous sand. Minimum temperature 5°C. Root rot risk if soil remains wet.
