Woody stems bearing straight spines up to 3 cm; ovate leaves 3-5 cm long arranged alternately; dark green foliage with reddish tips in colder months; flowers solitary or in small clusters, corolla ranging from red to pink.
Full sun exposure for at least 6 hours daily; reduced watering from autumn to spring, increased in summer; substrate containing at least 70% mineral content, neutral pH; minimum temperature 10 °C; prevent waterlogging to avoid root rot.
