Ferocactus histrix is a cactus native to central Mexico, commonly found in arid, rocky lowland habitats. It exhibits a globose to slightly columnar habit with pronounced ribs and strong spines. Flowering occurs in summer with yellow or red flowers at the apex, a distinctive trait within the Ferocactus genus. Globose to columnar plant up to 60 cm tall, with 13-20 thick ribs. Central spines are strong, straight, up to 10 cm long, ranging from yellow to brown. Numerous thinner radial spines. Apex flowers are tubular, yellow or red, about 5 cm in diameter.
Prefers full sun and a well-draining sandy-mineral substrate. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry completely between irrigations. Minimum temperature tolerance around 5 °C; avoid prolonged frost exposure. Use pots with drainage holes.
