Ferocactus latispinus is native to central Mexico, typically found on calcareous rocky soils and stony slopes. It is a slow-growing, polycarpic species notable for its broad, flattened spines, which differentiate it within the genus. Unlike other Ferocactus, it has fewer but thicker spines. Globose cactus with stems 30-60 cm wide. Central spines 10-20 mm broad, flattened, arranged in 5-7 radial clusters. Stem color dark green, shifting to bluish in summer, with yellow-brown spines.
Full direct sunlight for at least 6 hours daily. Water sparingly in winter, increase frequency in summer ensuring complete drying. Substrate with minimum 70% mineral content, neutral pH. Minimum temperature 8 °C. Susceptible to rot from waterlogging.
