Gymnocalycium mihznovichii is native to the mountainous areas of Paraguay, growing on calcareous, gravelly soils. It is a polycarpic species with globose stems up to 5 cm diameter. It is notable for prominent ribs and slender spines, an anomaly within the genus typically having sturdier spines. Globose stem 4-5 cm with 8-10 prominent ribs, radial slender spines 1-2 cm long. Olive green color turning grayish in summer. Apex slightly depressed.
Expose to filtered light with minimum 4 hours direct sun. Water sparingly late spring to early autumn; substrate must contain at least 70% mineral content. Minimum temperature 8 °C. Root rot risk if waterlogging occurs.
