Native to the arid zones of South Africa, Lithops thrive in sandy, gravelly soils with high drainage. These monocarpic succulents complete their growth cycle in spring, characterized by a central fissure between paired leaves. Their rock-like camouflage distinguishes them within the genus. Opposite leaves, nearly spherical, 1-3 cm diameter, smooth surface with variable spots from green-gray to reddish-brown. Central fissure is 2-5 mm wide and deep, most evident during spring growth.
Full direct sunlight for minimum 4 hours daily. Water only in autumn and spring, avoiding waterlogging. Substrate with at least 70% coarse sand and gravel. Minimum temperature 5°C; prone to root rot from excess moisture.
