Mammillaria plumosa originates from northeastern Mexico, inhabiting sandy and gravelly slopes between 600-1200 m altitude. It exhibits a clumping, polycarpic growth habit, uniquely characterized by dense feathery tubercles uncommon in other Mammillaria species. Cylindrical tubercles 7-10 mm long, covered with white feathery hairs up to 15 mm; stem globose to slightly elongated, 5-8 cm diameter; lacks rigid spines, only feathery hairs ranging from white to cream.
Full direct sunlight exposure; watering limited to spring through late summer, avoiding waterlogging; substrate composed of at least 70% mineral components (pumice, coarse sand); minimum temperature 5°C; highly susceptible to root rot from excessive moisture.
