Native to the central Andes of Ecuador and Peru, Trichocereus pachanoi inhabits volcanic rocky slopes between 2000 and 3000 meters elevation. It is a fast-growing, columnar, polycarpic cactus with basal branching and smooth bright green bark, differing from rougher-barked Trichocereus species. Cylindrical columnar stem with 6-8 ribs, each 2-3 cm thick; radial spines thin, 1-2 cm long; light green coloration intensifies under full sun. Typical height 3-5 m in natural habitat.
Full direct sunlight required. Water sparingly in winter; increase frequency in summer ensuring complete drying between irrigations. Substrate with minimum 70% mineral content (pumice, coarse sand). Minimum temperature 5°C; prolonged waterlogging causes rot.
