Dioscorea elephantipes originates from arid rocky limestone slopes in South Africa. It is a tuberous geophyte with a winter growth cycle, storing reserves in a thick, segmented caudex resembling a tortoise shell. This caudex structure is unique within its genus. Leaves heart-shaped, 3-5 cm, alternately and sparsely arranged. Deep green with yellowish tones in autumn. Thin, flexible shoots reaching up to 40 cm in length.
Full direct sunlight exposure. Watering limited from October to March, suspended in summer. Substrate with at least 70% draining mineral content. Minimum temperature 5°C. Susceptible to rot from waterlogging.
