Native to central Mexico's semi-desert mountainous regions, Echinocactus grusonii thrives on calcareous rocky soils. This monocarpic species features a globose stem up to 1 meter wide. It is distinctive within its genus for its prominent, straight yellow central spine. Globose stem up to 1 m diameter with 20-30 prominent ribs. Radial spines white, 1-2 cm long; central spines yellow, straight, 3-5 cm. Intense green coloration, lightening under water stress conditions.
Full direct sunlight exposure. Watering limited from spring to early autumn, suspended in winter. Substrate with at least 70% mineral content (coarse sand, pumice). Minimum temperature 5 °C. Susceptible to root rot from waterlogging.
