Espostoa lanata hails from the Peruvian Andes, inhabiting rocky slopes between 2000 and 3000 meters elevation. This polycarpic species produces a dense woolly coating that shields against intense UV radiation and water loss, a distinctive trait within the Espostoa genus. Cylindrical column up to 3 m tall, few or no branches; areoles covered by dense white wool up to 5 cm; thin yellow-brown spines 1-2 cm long; dark green epidermis visible beneath wool.
Full sun exposure; reduced watering from autumn to spring; substrate containing at least 70% well-draining mineral components; minimum temperature 5°C; susceptible to root rot from waterlogging.
