Gymnocalycium pflanzii originates from the mountainous calcareous slopes of northern Argentina at elevations of 800-1500 m. It is a polycarpic species flowering in spring, distinguished by thick, prominent tubercles uncommon in smoother Gymnocalycium species. Globose body 6-10 cm diameter, 8-10 pronounced ribs with tubercles bearing 1-2 cm radial spines. Intense olive green coloration shifting to gray-blue in summer.
Provide morning full sun with afternoon shade. Water exclusively in spring-summer using a substrate with 70% mineral content and high drainage. Minimum temperature 5°C; prevent water stagnation to avoid root rot.
