Native to eastern South America, mainly Brazil and Uruguay, Opuntia monacantha variegata thrives on sandy soils and limestone rocks. It is a polycarpic species with variegated cladodes, a rare trait in Opuntia, featuring irregular margins and white-yellowish spots. Oval-spatulate cladodes, 10-15 cm long, with irregular margins and white-yellow variegation. Open, spaced arrangement; light green epidermis with seasonal shifts to paler shades.
Place in full sun or bright partial shade. Water only during spring-summer, allowing substrate to dry completely between irrigations. Substrate with at least 70% mineral content, well-draining. Minimum temperature 5°C; susceptible to prolonged waterlogging.
