Opuntia rufida originates from northeastern Mexico, typically found on calcareous rocky slopes between 1200 and 1800 meters elevation. It is a polycarpic species featuring cladodes densely covered with red glochids, a unique trait within Opuntia. Adapted to nutrient-poor, well-ventilated substrates. Oval-flat cladodes measuring 10-15 cm, arranged openly; dense red glochids 1-2 mm long; glaucous green color with bluish hues intensifying during winter.
Full sun exposure; reduced watering from autumn to spring, frequent in summer; substrate composed of at least 70% mineral drainage material; tolerates down to 0 °C; prone to damage from prolonged waterlogging.
