Opuntia santa rita originates from central Mexico's semi-arid calcareous rocky slopes. It is a polycarpic species exhibiting a bushy habit with overlapping flattened cladodes. Distinguished within the genus by yellow spines up to 5 cm long and yellow-green flowers. Flattened oval cladodes 10-15 cm, overlapping arrangement. Rigid yellow spines 3-5 cm, grouped in clusters of 3-5. Flowers 4-5 cm, yellow-green. Globose fruits 3-4 cm, brick red.
Expose to full sun for minimum 6 hours daily. Water only in spring and summer, avoiding waterlogging. Substrate with at least 70% mineral content (sand and gravel). Minimum temperature 5 °C. Root rot risk if overwatered.
