Stenocereus thurberi is native to Baja California and Sonora, Mexico, inhabiting rocky limestone slopes and coastal sandy soils. It is a branched, columnar, polycarpic cactus reaching up to 7 m. Unique within its genus for its high salt tolerance. Cylindrical stems with 8-10 prominent ribs, 3-5 cm diameter, radial spines 1-3 cm long, glaucous green color shifting to bluish under full sun.
Full direct sunlight exposure. Watering limited from spring to autumn, suspended in winter. Substrate with at least 70% mineral content, mandatory drainage. Minimum tolerance to 5 °C, susceptible to rot from waterlogging.
