Aeonium zwartkop originates from the Canary Islands, typically found on volcanic rocky slopes. It is a polycarpic species with a winter growth cycle, forming dark rosettes adapted to intense light absorption. Unlike other Aeonium, it exhibits a pronounced anthocyanin pigmentation nearing black. Compact rosettes 10-15 cm wide, lanceolate leaves with acute tips, smooth surface lacking spines. Color shifts from dark green to nearly black under full sun, lighter hues appear in shade and summer dormancy.
Place in full sun to preserve black pigmentation. Water exclusively during winter, avoiding waterlogging; substrate should contain at least 70% mineral drainage material. Minimum temperature 5 °C; prone to root rot under cold, wet conditions.
