Espostoa guentheri is a columnar cactus native to the Peruvian Andes, typically found on calcareous rocky slopes at 1500-2500 m elevation. It is characterized by yellowish-ivory spines up to 3 cm long and nocturnal tubular white flowers. This slow-growing species is polycarpic. Column up to 2 m tall with cylindrical stems 5-7 cm diameter, covered by radially and centrally arranged spines in a spiral pattern. Central spines longer (2-3 cm), yellow-ivory color. Stems light green, darkening in summer.
Full direct sunlight exposure. Water sparingly in winter; increase frequency in summer only if substrate is dry. Substrate must contain at least 70% draining mineral components. Minimum temperature 5 °C. Susceptible to root rot from waterlogging.
