Native to semi-arid rocky slopes of South Africa, Fockea edulis is a perennial tuberous climber with a large water-storing caudex. It produces annual twining stems. Uniquely within its genus, it develops an edible, sizable tuber beneath the soil surface. Leaves ovate, 3-6 cm long, oppositely arranged on twining stems up to 3 m. Light green color fading to pale yellow in summer, with subtly undulate margins.
Needs full sun exposure for minimum 6 hours daily. Water sparingly in winter, increase during active growth. Substrate composed of at least 70% mineral components ensuring drainage. Minimum temperature 10 °C. Root rot risk if waterlogged.
