Notocactus submammulosus is native to the southeastern Brazilian highlands, typically found on calcareous rocky substrates under full sun exposure. It exhibits slow, polycarpic growth and is distinguished by more pronounced tubercles compared to other Notocactus species. Globose stem with conical tubercles 7-10 mm long arranged spirally, reaching 8 cm diameter. Glaucous green color with yellow-green hues in summer, darkening during winter.
Requires minimum 6 hours direct full sun daily. Water sparingly from spring through late summer, cease watering in winter. Substrate with at least 70% mineral content (pumice, coarse sand). Minimum temperature 5 °C; prolonged waterlogging causes rot.
